NDOT Announces Weekend Closure of I-80/Keystone Interchange as Part of I-80 Improvement

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Keystone Avenue interchange with Interstate 80 will be closed August 16-18 as part of a multi-year Nevada Department of Transportation project to resurface and enhance the interstate.

Between 9 p.m. Friday, August 16 through Sunday, August 18 at 6 a.m., the following closures will take place for paving:

  • Keystone Avenue will be closed between Seventh and Fifth streets.
  • All I-80 ramps to and from Keystone Avenue will also be closed.
  • The North Sierra/Virginia Street on ramp to westbound I-80 will also be closed.
  • Traffic detours will be marked.

The weekend closures will allow for final paving of the entire interchange, as well as temporary roadway striping and utility work. The weekend-long closure helps reduce the length of closures compared to if only overnight road work was scheduled. The closure is subject to change. A similar closure took place in late April for traffic sensor installation and base-layer paving.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Drivers will also continue to see the following road work on both directions of I-80 from Keystone Avenue west to the state line:

  • Overnight interstate lane closures will take place 7 p.m.-7 a.m. Sunday evenings through Friday mornings, with periodic evening and overnight lane closures on weekends

One lane of interstate will remain open in each direction during construction

  • Short-term overnight interstate ramp closures will also take place between 9 p.m.-5 a.m. nightly, excluding Saturday nights.
  • Motorists are advised to slow to posted speed limits and travel safely through road work zones

Begun in the spring of 2018, the multi-year project will resurface both directions of I-80 between Keystone Avenue in Reno and the Nevada-California border. Approximately four inches of the roadway surface will be removed and repaved on more than 12 miles of interstate. Merge lanes will be lengthened from West Fourth Street to enhance driver safety. Several roadside shoulders will be widened and roadside barrier rail improvements made as well, along with installation of a wrong-way driver detection system. As part of NDOT’s dedication to preserving the quality of stormwater crossing state roadways, roadside drainage and water treatment features will be enhanced.

The more than $42 million in improvements by contractor Q&D Construction will enhance the interstate for the as many as 79,000 motorists who travel it daily.
